Greyhawk: The Undead

Halls of the Dead

We dug deeper into these halls, into a place where the walls are miscoloured from water and mold. A place where light has not been seen for a very long time.

These caverns are of unnatural feel, runes etched into the strong emit a faint glow and block our paths forward. Not knowing the origin of this magic or the nature of this area fills my mind with worry. The world is at stake and desperate measures are needed, we toss the torch into the nearby rune and the chamber echos with screams that no mortal should hear.

The darkness evelops us and sounds of the dead wallow in these halls, as we catch our breath we stand face to face with those who died in these halls centuries ago. We now knew why the goblins did not come here.

Our encounter bore unexpected fruit, from the depths of these crypts and the untold horrors they contained a place of salvage I never expected. Down a hallway lined with sarcofogasses a light provided a beacon of hope. A shrine endowed with the paintings of Bahumet, Lord of all Dragons were surrounded by knights. The cieling cast a gentle glow of starlight into the room gently illuminating it.

The ravages of time appeared non-existant in this chamber, as Bahumet shone down upon it preserving its nature. I paid my respects, whispering a solumn prayer extending my thanks as a servant of Morodin. The noises of the undead were illy silent, silenced by the dragon lord himself. My heart was filled with feeling of home and my upbringing within the temple.

The gods watch over us this night.

The Goblin Hordes

With the undead cleansed from Winterhaven we made haste back to the Keep, well rested we all looked at one another and nodded as we entered the keep once more. We knew that this would not be as easy as last time, the goblins would be watching for our return and as we approached the stairs I drew my shield and marched forward.

As the light from [Eva] shone forward, our presence was known by those who stood guard. A pair of goblin brutes adorned in armor and shield, barely enough for a dwarf let alone the five of us. I charged into battle greeting these creatures with the blows of my hammer. The rythmic sounds of battle echod through the halls as metal and fire struck our foes and scorched the walls.

As the last goblin fell the pitter patter of more approached, we took possition near the storage room and cut down there numbers one by one. The fat goblin who urged us to leave the keep was not as happy to see us well rested as we slain his followers. He tried to escape but there was no where to run, the floor dripping with the blood of his kin.

We would not be denied our passage, [Enemy] has to be stopped.

Winterhaven Graveyard

<font>When we arrived back in town we were not met with joyful faces but those of despair and deprevation. As we approached the town wall Lord Pedrag stood with his captain and imparted some truly terrible news. The undead have arrisen in the nearby grave yard, untold horrors resurected upon this world under the control of a dark puppetmaster. This could not have been a coincidence, the ones we seek to destroy in Shadowfell are the ones responsible.

I have pledged myself into the erradicating the undead from these lands, it is my oath, it is my destiny.

Pedrag spoke of a large number of people who were taken into the night by these abominations, the gravel leading towards teh graveyard was distrubed with the blood of innocents. Rage filled my heart and Morodin's bolstered my resolve as we sought out to end this plague and retrieve those who were taken. I have never known undead to take prisioners and as women and children were amongst those taken my heart felt heavy.

We approached the large wooden gate of the cemetary, light snow covered the grounds and darkness filled the area. As we entered a suprising sight befell our group – Nineran. The trapper from the keep beckoned to us, warning of the undead asking to follow. Why was this questionable "trapper" so desperate for our help after weeks of being dishorable to us, we readied our weapons and did our best to hide our true intentions. We knew this elf was lying and we were going to find out why.

Nineran had changed, darkness drew her eys bloodshot red, her words dark as she lashed out in an a togue we could only partially decifer. How many others have are helping [Enemy name], how many others must we smite to restore the light to winterhaven?

Eccaia seemed eager to kill Nineran for her betrayals but my oath is absolute, she must stand trial for her sins and as such I dragged Nineran back to Lord Pedrag for incarseration and questioning. Let us hope that the next individual we bring to the keep is [Boss].

The Forgotten Caverns

<font>This goblin we came to know as splug led us through the crypt that the keep had now become, the stench of goblin and death soaked the halls. What are the goblins upto? What are they trying to accomplish? We continued onwards into an area that looked to be older the the keep itself. Excavations occured in these chambers but what did they find, we explored the bowels of this keep as the masonry slowly turned into solid rock.

The sound of water echod in the distance, surly it would serve as a good place to rest before pushing further into the keep after [Villian Name]. As we approached the sound of the water we began to notice holes where something appeared to have digged out filled with the bones of goblin. A smug look shot across Tuks face as we approached the first goblin body, it wasnt until she backed into the hole that I got mine. Her skil with a blade was only mirrored in her clumbslyness, ill temperaed at times </font><font>but a welcome member of our crusade.

We approached the cavern and a light glow emited from what appeared to be plants in the distance, a spined beast sat at the far edge of the room feeding on the vegetation of the area. A glint of green caught Eccias eye from behind the creature yet as we moved forward the creature sat unaturally still. As we approached the sounds of digging we all around us as beasts sprug out of the ground all around us, the large creature turned to face us emiting a loud shriek as the smaller creatures began to slash at us.

The Ruined Keep

<font>Disbarking the walls of Winterhaven a light snow coated the trail to the ruined keep, a satisfying crunch as we waded through the snow along the path to the Winterhaven keep. The snow obscured our view and as we arrived in the clearing we stood at the foot of the [Keep Name] laying in ruin. Walls surrounded the keep fallen from previous battles and the weathering of time, chunks of rock, dust and debris was scattered through the area. We approached carefully, not knowing who was watching nor what we encountered [Eva] noticed an enterance into the lower bowls of the keep.

Took shifted through the shadows into the depths of the keep, seeing a single Kobold guard and signaling us foward. As I entered the room I found Took cleaning her blade standing over the Kobold guard, smiling gleefully while a patroll approached out of her sightline. Arrows rocketed forward from the hall striking my shield, as took took cover a loud click drew my eyes towards took as she disapered into the floor. The room filled with shifty Kobolds filth as we hunted them relentlessly, what drives these monsters to do the willing of [Evil God].

By Morodins might I shall exorcise the evil that lives here.</font><font>

Persuing the Kobolds - Fall 597 (Daybreak)

<font>Before many of the villagers are out of there beds, we make our way towards the Kobold camp. As we inch our way through the brush we notice Kobolds standing guard, I dont think theyve spotted us says [Eva]. We creep closer and plan our attack.

<font>As we exterminate the remainder of these peasts one crys out in its last death rattle, mentioning a name we all recognize. Irontooth.

Hopefully this Irontooth provides a greater challenge then these things. Lord Pedrag will be pleased.

The Caves of Irontooth

<font>Gripping my hammer and shield I began to calm my nerves, listening to the rushing waterfall in the distance. Through the trees I could make out the source of the stream now tained with Kobold blood and nodding to [Chris] we made our way to the foothold of the falls.

The waterfall provided us with the opportunity to approach unseen and unheard but also prevented us from being able to detect what may be inside. Weapons drawn we sprung </font>
<font>past the rushing wall of water, as the water cleared from our eyes many shadowin figures sprung up and attacked. I grinned and tighetened my grip of my warhammer delivering Morodin's blows to these beasts, as the corpses started to pile Iroontooth finally emerged. Never had I see a Kobold with the ability to weild two axes at once, even for the mightest of warriors it is a feat that requires years of training to master.

<font>As the battle raged the of Morodins surged through me and my comrades, one by one we put this threat to rest. As Irontooth expelled his final breath, unexpected treasures awaited me. Within one of Irontooths pocket contained a note speaking of a winterhaven spy. Barowin? It seems only time will tell in this matter.

<font>As we read the note Took pointed out a small chest in the far corner of the caves.

As we continued to search Irontooth we found a small key which fit the lock of said chest, as we opened it gold coins spilled against the stone floor however that was not all. Amongst the coins, there was a set of armor fashioned for a dwarf. As we retrieved it the scales shimmered in the daylight, as a fellow craftsman it looked to be a excusitly well crafted set of Scale Armor. It would takes years to craft an armor as fine as this, not only a product of superior worksmanship but also compelled a sense of invigoration.

I shall wear this armor with great respect and humility, this armor has seen great battle and I will respect its bloodline.

Burial Site - Fall 597

The midday sun poked through the forest canopy, the path which we had followed on our way here thinned and slowly disolved into the lush green of the forest. We continued onwards south until noticing a large clearing and what appeared to be a slight depression in the land.

We had found the excavation site; as we emerged from the treeline we saw numerous figures working below to close off the site as a pair of dragonwhelps standing guard. I locked eyes with the beasts as we both stood our ground, unsure of how the events would play out. Out of the crowd a short humanoid beckoned us further into the camp, eager to show us the dragon bones what they had discovered.

To most people, dragons were things of legend and myth and as such the ability to view a remants of these creatures was a thrill to our scolars. We had our suspicions but the wherabouts of [Evas] father and any trace of the kobold threat that was rumored to be in the area was more important then our safety.

As we made our way down the slope and into the camp [ashleys] eyes glistened as she sized up the crates and there potential contents. The drow introduced himself as [Kellaral] sent out to discover an artifact and while he would not say [Ashleys] character quiety began to ready her weapon out of pure instinct. It wasnt until we questioned the man about his motives and whereabouts of [Evas father]. At that moment he drew his weapon and those who appeared to be working attempted to surround us, we were foolish to walk into this trap but the only way out was to fight our way out.

One by one we slayed men and beast alike until only Kellaral remained, calling upon the divine furvor of Morodin, my hammer rained down on him causing him emense agony but rather then staggering back he disapeared. I called out at his cowardess thinking he had used cheap parlor tricks to escape until I felt the sharp sting of his [weapon type] slide past the plates of my armor and into my flesh.

Enraged I turned to face him once again dealing a terrible blow and knocking him close to death. [Chris] was quick to rush over to him, disarming him of weapons and binding his arms and legs. With the [ashleys] blade at his throat he was quick to explain his actions and bestow the location of [Evas] father, not 30 feet from our location obscured from view.

[evas father] appeared to be unharmed although emotionaly stired, he began to explain his reasoning for being here and what he had discovered. In his excavation [eva father] found what be believed to be a mirror of unknown origin or value, upon retrieving the item [nicole] and [eva] did not detect a magical essence. Whoever wanted this mirror sent mercenaries to retrieve it no matter the cost.

As he began to speak of his scientific findings, [prisioner] faltered to his side allowing [Nicoles] to catch a glimpse of a medalian under his vestments. As [nicole] grasped the necklace to examine it further, [evas fathers] eyes widened as he gasped [wife name] and asked to see the medalian. Nicole carefully removed the necklace from our drow prisioner and handed it to [evas father], I later came to realize that this medalian had belonged to [Evas mother].

He held the amulet carefully, brushing the dirt from its casing and opening it. He looked inside, smiled slightly and removed the piece of parchment from within handing the amulet back to [nicole] as he folded it away in his pocket. Nicole attempted to give it to [eva] but as she reached for the item she closed [nicoles] hand around, without a word we understood what the necklace meant to her. That is how the amulet came into my possession, it is quite an honor to wear an item such as this but even moreso knowing it once contained something far more valuable to [Eva] and [Evas Father]. I wear it with great humility.

As evas father left our attention turned back to the drow, where we passionatly discussed the fate of this man. Many were in favor of killing this creature where he kneeled but decided not to sully the memory of this day nor kill living proof of Sister Lenoras darkest fears.

Battleworn and not wishing to bring any more attention to ourselves [Chris] character exposed a secret of the [southern coast] on how to transport prisoners discreetly. Out of his gear [chris] retrieved a large sack, picked [Kellaral] up by the neck and deposited him into the bag which he then threw over his shoulder folowed by a muffled cry.

"Shall we depart" [chris] said, and we made our way back to winterhaven as I let out a small chuckle.

As we approached Winterhaven a strange chill had filled the air and not a single person was in sight, it felt like a graveyard. Aware of this change we carefully walked into Winterhaven and to the temple. Our prisoner validated sister lenora feelings however this issue involved the entire town, we had to find Lord Pedrag. On our way to the Inn (Sage name) stopped us speaking of the research we had asked.

Upon further discussion we learned of the keeps history and the evil it once concealed along with source of the medalian. The obsidian mark was that of Orcus, a demon god of great power. [prisioner name] began to flail in the bag but quickly stopped after quick stike of [nicoles] quarterstaff.

With that knowledge the old man scurried back into his tower to investigate this threat and we made our way to [pub name] to speak with Lord Pedrag. Luckily for us he was in attendance as we called him over and requested a private audience…

Barowin's Deceit - Fall 597 (Afternoon)

...Lord pedrag follows us into the room above the bar. As Eccai closes the door behind us as [Chris] unties the backpack and shows the lord our captive. Bound, paniced and gaged [Prisoner Name] now looked up us as Pedrag looked downward. As the prisoner spoke of what he knew Lord Pedrag expressions dropped from confusion, misbelief and finally fear.

When the prisoner was done telling us what he knew the lord signaled one of his men downstairs. Two members of the watch retrieved the Faye bound and gagged halfling allowing us to continue our conversation in private.

Lord pedrag sat on the nearest bed and grasped his forehead, This is far worse then he could have ever imagined. Far worse then he ever could have dreamed.

"Barowin." he stated in misbelief…
"Barowin has been part of this town for over a year, he was one of us and now this… None of my men are equipped to handle a threat like this".
We all knew his claim to be true, neither trained nor equipped the local militia would be easy prey for Barowins men. The group was united in what we had to do next.

We approached Barowins shop and with great haste and weapons drawn as we burst into the shop. Barowin looked up from his book, adjusted his glasses and said "What took you so long?". We stood there motionless for a second but as the halfling sprung towards him, Barowin bolted through a door behind him. We quickly followed knowing full well whatever awaited us would surely be a ambush. The only way out of the building was through the front door and by Morodin's resolve nothing would get by my shield.

As we entered the backroom we caught the light escaping from a door we would not have noticed otherwise. I raised my shield as we descended the spiral staircase into the cold darkness. A simple shopkeeper Barowin was not.

When we reached the bottom of the stairs the room was partially lit by the flickering of candels and the sounds of absolute silence. Barowin was standing at what looked to be an alter and as we stepped forwards, four figures additional stepped out of the shadows. [Nicole] grabbed onto my Pauldrons as fear ran through her voice, the figures that stood before us were not creatures of this world.

These figures appeared as shadows upon men, long flowing black robes seemed to draft from a non-existant breeze passing from our world into the darkness. I had never seen things but I had heard of these creatures from the knights of my order, my grip tightened.

It was a hardfough but as Barowins limp body hit the floor we knew that this was only the begining. We all stood still for a moment catching our breath and taking in what happened. It was in this moment I noticed the light of the candles flickering ever so gently in what seemed to be a breeze, as I approached the alter I noticed what appeared to be a seam in the wall. As we pushed back the wall a cold shrill went down my spine. I'uz. Countless books of devotions to Iuz and a chest filled with offerings of 200 gold and 200 silver. I look over and the halfling frantically stuffing her pockets will our spoils.

What was this place? Who was Barowin really?

I had never seen so many forbidden texts in one place before, as I flipped through the papers it appeared that Sister Lenoras concerns were very real. Talk of awakening a Shadow Wurm, death and disease incarnate. My order must be notified.

As we left this crypt I retrieved a copy of the tome for further study, My order must know of these beasts. We made our way towards to keep where Lord Pedrag and Commander [Capt of the Guard Name] was questioning the prisioner. Lord Pedrag asks what has happened to Barowin and we explain our story and show him the book, his face goes white and guards are dispatched to Barowin's shop to secure the materials from falling into the wrong hands. Lord Pedrag thumbs through the book but his comprehension of the materials at face value is no better then mine, we seek out Valthrum in order to gain some perspective into this threat. We speak to Valthrum but he seems more interested in whats contained in these books then what we have to say, we leave the old man to his tower while we head down to the Inn.

Its only midday but today was a rough day, everyone agrees to relax and get a few pints.
In my case it ends up being 11.
